THE BEGGAR'S OPERA
By John Gay
Directed by Joe Rosta
Produced by Joe Rosta and Maggie Gibson
June 21-24, 2012 at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope, Brooklyn (audition notice)
In June, VLOG comes to Brooklyn with a staged concert of The Beggar's Opera, John Gay's acerbic, poor man's epic with attitude. Inspired by his pal Jonathan Swift, Gay (who lost his shirt in the South Sea stock bubble bust of 1720, created London's first musical hit with his portrayal of the ignoble trials of thieves, whores, drunks and bad coppers mixed with lilting music by Johann Christoph Pepusch. Mack the Knife (the villain, not the song) was born in "The Beggars Opera", along with Polly Peachum and her wretched parents, Jenny Diver, and other folks made infamous by the beloved offspring, Threepenny Opera.
